Danilo Stagni studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan and obtained his diploma under the guidance of Maestro Elvio Modonesi. At the age of only 16 he was selected by Claudio Abbado as first soloist horn for the Teatro alla Scala orchestra in Milan, a role that he still holds today. In 1979-80, also with Abbado, he won the position of first horn in the European Community Young Orchestra. During those same years he also won prizes in different international competitions including the Viotti (1978) the Verganti di Stresa and the international competition for horns in Ancona (1979), in addition to a series of national competitions and awards. He has played often as soloist at the Scala, and has several recordings to his name for Sony Classical and for the Swiss Italian radio. Since 2000 he is professor at the Accademia della Scala: he has held master classes in Italy and Japan (at Ashikaga University and at the Sapporo Summer Festival). Since 2008 he collaborates as guest first horn in the Berlin Staatskpelle Orchestra with whom he has performed the complete Bruckner symphonies and the Wagner cycle conducted by Daniel Barenboim.
